What attracts tourists to Mount Rinjani in Indonesia

What attracts tourists to Mount Rinjani in Indonesia

cami, 29 de Junho, 2025

Mount Rinjani, located on the paradisiacal island of Lombok in Indonesia, is much more than an active volcano that is almost 4,000 meters high. It is a true magnet for adventurers from all over the world. Recently, the place has once again gained international attention due to Juliana Marins, a Brazilian woman who waited for four days for rescue after an accident while hiking, but ended up not surviving.

But after all, what attracts so many tourists to Mount Rinjani?

Neighboring the famous island of Bali, Mount Rinjani in Indonesia has returned to the spotlight after the accident involving Brazilian Juliana Marins, who fell from a cliff while hiking in the region.

Rinjani is actually an active volcano and one of the country’s top trekking destinations. Located on the island of Lombok, it gives its name to Gunung Rinjani National Park, a protected area that attracts adventurers from all over the world in search of lush nature and extreme challenges.

From the top, you can watch the sunrise illuminate the neighboring islands and the crystal-clear Segara Anak Lake, which formed in the crater of the last major eruption. The landscape is a mix of tropical forests, hot springs, waterfalls and breathtaking rock formations.

According to a travel publication, the destination is so popular among trekkers that more than 1,000 tourists had to be evacuated from the site during the earthquakes that hit the island in 2018. The volcano remained closed to visitors for several months afterward.

“Few actually make the very strenuous effort required to reach the summit itself, preferring to stop at the crater rim (approximately 2,700 m), where the views of the crater lake are breathtaking,” the national park website says.

“Making the extra effort of climbing another 1,000 m to the top requires a considerably higher level of physical fitness, not to mention strength of mind and a sense of adventure,” it adds.

Challenging trail that attracts backpackers and adventurers

The 2- to 4-day treks to the summit are a true test of physical and emotional endurance. Many tourists seek out this trail as a journey of personal achievement. The route is not recommended for beginners: the path is steep, temperatures change drastically and the terrain requires preparation. However, those who reach the top report one of the most transformative experiences of their lives.

Relatively easy to access from Bali

Despite its remoteness, Mount Rinjani is relatively easy to access for visitors to Bali. It takes just a few hours by boat or plane to reach the island of Lombok. From there, they can head to the villages of Sembalun or Senaru, the main starting points for the hikes. This is why many travelers to Bali include Rinjani in their Indonesia itineraries.

Dangers and challenges of the trail

Despite its beauty, Mount Rinjani is a destination full of risks. The trails are long, the weather changes quickly and the terrain is rugged. It was in this scenario that a Brazilian woman recently had an accident. The incident raised awareness about the dangers of hiking without proper supervision or without physical and emotional preparation.

Rescues in remote regions like this are complex and require the support of local guides, helicopters and specialized teams. It is essential that tourists hire authorized agencies and follow all safety recommendations.

Rules and challenges of hiking

Hiking is not permitted between January and March, the rainy season. The dry season, between April and November, is considered ideal for visiting.

Lonely Planet also warns that you cannot trek the volcano on your own. The publication also says that the park’s official website has good maps and information, “as well as a useful section with reports on dubious trekking agencies.”

In other words, it is recommended that you climb the mountain with an agency and team specialized in this type of adventure.

Entry to the park costs about US$12 per day, and the entire package costs approximately US$170 per person for the shortest two-day route, according to Lonely Planet.

The challenge includes loose rocks, loose ground and very steep climbs. Temperatures at the summit can be very low, reaching close to 0ºC.

The national park recommends wearing windproof and waterproof jackets, a headlamp (a type of flashlight attached to the head with a strap) and says that trekking/climbing boots are an “extra” but “not necessary”. And for those heading to the summit of Rinjani, trekking poles are recommended, because of the loose rocks.

Mount Rinjani is one of the most impressive destinations in Indonesia. Its wild beauty and physical challenge make it an adventurer’s dream. But the recent news of a Brazilian woman who fell on the trail and did not survive reminds us of the importance of planning well, being physically prepared and never underestimating the power of nature.

Whether it’s to watch the sunrise from the top of a volcano, experience the local culture or simply test your own limits, Mount Rinjani remains one of the most mystical and challenging places in Asia — but it should be explored with respect and responsibility.
